Walter (Chip) Schroeder, Group President and CFO

Walter (Chip) Schroeder, President and CEO, GCS Walter Schroeder has a 30-year background in energy finance.  He was an officer of MidCon Corp, a major energy and natural gas pipeline based in Chicago, until it was acquired in 1986 by Occidental Petroleum.  He then worked for Goldman Sachs & Co in corporate finance until 1991, when he joined the AES Corporation, a leading global independent power developer.  Mr. Schroeder founded Proton Energy Systems, a developer and manufacturer of advanced hydrogen and fuel cell systems, and led the successful public offering of that company in 2000.  He holds both undergraduate and masters’ degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

 

 

Marc McMenamin, President of GCS Energy Recovery of Pinellas Inc. and Director of Operating Division

Marc McMenamin, President of Operations Division, GCS Marc McMenamin is a founding member of GCS. He has extensive entrepreneurial experience in the waste management industry including in the development, recapitalization, refurbishment and operations of EFW and other solid waste management facilities. This experience includes overseeing the take-over and turn-around of troubled EFW facilities and gaining regulatory approvals for the treatment and disposal of special industrial waste streams. More significantly, Marc has the unique experience as an owner and operator of an EFW facility.  This experience provided a platform for him to build a successful Waste Management Company and enjoy a successful IPO. Other relevant business experience includes vertically integrating his Waste Management Company to include manufacturing, recycling, transportation, and TSD facilities. Marc obtained a Chief Facility Operator License for a Resource Recovery facility in 1996 from ASME and earned a BBA degree from Hofstra University in 1984.

 

 

Charles Scolaro, Technical Director

Charles Scolaro has over 35 years of environmental and operations experience, with a focus on water and solid waste treatment and disposal. His background includes design, construction management, feasibility studies, and permitting, for numerous municipalities and private and industrial clients throughout the United States. Mr. Scolaro has also held senior management positions at engineering, equipment manufacturing and water/wastewater operations firms. Some of his key projects include managing the redesign of a co-disposal facility, designed to combust municipal solid waste and dewatered sludge while creating energy for the adjacent wastewater treatment plant. He was responsible for leading GCS’ technical team that was selected by the Los Angeles Bureau of Sanitation to develop a facility that incorporates a material recovery facility and the GCS Advanced Thermal Recycling process for municipal solid waste. Mr. Scolaro was also the Vice President of Engineering at Morse Boulger, a manufacturer of multiple hearth and solid waste incinerators, and the President of Energy Resources, a manufacturer of combustion and heat recovery equipment.

 

 

Randy Fernandez, Director of Project Development

Randy Fernández has more than thirty years of business experience.  Since 2009 he has held advisory, management and operational roles in various businesses involved in oil field services, power services, waste to energy project development and water treatment technologies.  From 1999 to 2009, Mr. Fernández served as Group Vice President at Severn Trent Water Purification and Managing Director of Severn Trent DeNora, a leading global supplier of water and wastewater treatment solutions.  From 1996-1999, Mr. Fernández held the position of President of Bath Electrical Systems, Inc., a private equity portfolio company.  His prior experience included various management roles in sales, marketing, engineering and operations management in a leading oil field service company. Mr. Fernández earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California, Irvine, and a Master of Business Administration from the Amos Tuck School at Dartmouth College.

 

 

Dan Elias, Commercial Director and COO

Dan Elias is a founding member of GCS. Dan brings 25+ years of corporate and transactional experience with public/private partnerships and infrastructure projects. He has successfully negotiated and/or managed the execution of over four hundred municipal and industrial infrastructure projects varying in size, structure, scope and complexity. He is highly experienced in project finance and with all types of project delivery methods in the energy, waste-to-energy and water/wastewater industries. Dan is a graduate of the City University of New York, Queens College from where he received his B.A. in economics in 1982 and his law degree in 1986.

 

 

Kurt Rieke, Director of Legal and Regulatory Affairs

Kurt Rieke has practiced environmental law independently, with Farer Fersko, P.C. in New Jersey, at National Grid in New York City and Long Island, and throughout the United States with Covanta Energy. He has experience with project development, commercial negotiations, and finance of greenfield and brownfield projects. He also supported facility operations dealing with issues of compliance with environmental and occupational safety laws, government affairs and contract management. He received his J.D. from New York Law School, Cum Laude, in 1991. He also has an M.S. in Environmental Engineering and a B.S. in Biology from the University of Cincinnati.
